Choosing a copier
Free trade copiers: what you get and what to check
What free trade copiers usually include, the questions to ask before one touches a funded account, and how a free trial compares with a free tool.
Searching for free trade copiers makes sense. If you are paying evaluation fees on several prop firm accounts, another monthly bill is not welcome. Free tools exist in several forms, and some will be exactly what you need. This guide is about how to judge one, so you know what you are getting before it touches an account you care about.
The kinds of "free" you will find
- A copier built into a trading platform. Some platforms let you copy between accounts on that same platform at no extra cost.
- A free plan of a paid product. Usually limited by the number of accounts, brokers or features.
- A free trial. The full product for a short time, then a paid plan.
- Scripts and add-ons. Community tools that run inside a platform, often unsupported.
None of these is wrong. They answer different needs, and the right question is not "is it free?" but "does it do what my accounts need?".
What to check in any free copier
These are the same questions you would ask of a paid copier. With a free tool they are simply easier to skip.
Does it support all of your brokers?
A copier tied to one platform can only copy between accounts on that platform. If your accounts are spread over Tradovate, Rithmic and TopstepX, check whether a leader on one can copy into followers on another.
How many accounts can it copy to?
Free plans are often capped by the number of followers or connections. Count the accounts you expect to run in a few months, not only today.
What does it copy, and when?
Does it copy fills, or every order you place? Fill-driven copying waits until the leader's order actually fills, so a cancelled order never leaves a stray order on a follower. More in how futures copy trading works.
What happens when an order goes wrong?
Ask what the tool does when a follower order is rejected, or when the outcome of an order is unclear. A copier that re-sends blindly can double a position. One that stops and checks keeps the account safe. This is the question that matters most and is the hardest to answer from a feature list.
Is every account protected on its own?
Look for daily loss limits per account, closing of followers that are left holding when the leader is flat, and take-profit and stop-loss orders that live at the broker. See why every copied account needs its own daily loss limit.
Can you get out in one click?
One click to close a whole group, with each account confirmed flat, is worth more than any other feature on a bad day.
Who answers when something looks wrong?
With a funded account, a question answered in an hour and a question never answered are very different. Check where support happens and whether the tool is still maintained.
Does your prop firm allow it?
Some firms only allow copiers on an approved list, or only their own platform's copier. Check before you connect: see which prop firms allow a trade copier.
The hidden cost of a copier
A copier's price is easy to compare. Its mistakes are not. A single duplicated trade or a follower left open after the leader went flat can cost more than a year of any subscription, and on a prop firm account it can cost the account itself. Whatever you choose, free or paid, test it with one micro contract before you trust it with full size, and keep your firm's own limits as your main safety net.
Where Replica fits
Replica is not a free copier. It is a paid app with a free trial, so you can check everything above on your own accounts before you pay:
- 3 days free, then Essentials at $50 a month, $135 every 3 months or $480 a year (USD).
- No per-account fees: unlimited followers and connections on one plan.
- Brokers: Tradovate, NinjaTrader, Rithmic and TopstepX, mixed in one group if you like. Futures only.
- Fill-driven copying, an unclear order never re-sent blindly, and followers closed when the leader is flat.
- Per-account Daily Loss, Daily Profit and Trades Limit rules, and one-click Flatten.
Sign-ups are opening soon. Meanwhile you can read how Replica's copier works, the quick start and the plans and free trial page, or work through the guide to choosing copy trading software.
