Copy trading 101
Do you need a VPS for a trade copier? When it helps, and when your firm says no
A desktop trade copier only copies while it runs. When a Windows VPS makes sense, what it changes, and why some prop firms require orders from your own device.
A desktop trade copier copies only while it is open. If your PC sleeps, restarts for an update or loses its connection, nothing is copied until it is back. A VPS (a virtual private server: a Windows computer you rent in a data center) is one way to keep the copier running on a machine that is always on.
When a VPS helps
- Your own PC is not reliable while you trade: it sleeps, it is a laptop you carry around, or your home connection drops.
- You trade from several places and want the copier in one fixed place.
When you do not need one
If you trade from the same PC every day, it stays on while you trade and your connection is stable, that PC is enough. A copier needs a dependable computer, not a powerful one.
Check your prop firm first
Some firms require orders to come from your own device, not from a VPS or a remote server. Topstep does: API orders must come from your own device, so run your copier on your own PC for Topstep accounts (checked October 18, 2026; see TopstepX API access). For any other firm, check its rules before you move a copier to a server.
If you use a VPS
- Pick Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, close to your broker's servers if you can.
- Plan for Windows updates: a restart closes the copier until you open it again.
- Keep the copier open while you trade, exactly as you would on your own PC.
Where Replica fits
Replica is a desktop app for Windows 10 and 11. It runs the same on your own PC or on a Windows VPS, and it must be open for copying and risk rules to work. Every time it starts, you sign in again. See what you need to run Replica and desktop or cloud trade copier.
